How Metal Braces Work: A Parent’s Guide to the Basic

TeamUncategorized

Your child needs braces. You know they are effective at what they do because they have been around for many, many years. But when they are affecting your own child’s teeth, it is natural to have questions.

Gaining an understanding of how metal braces work can help you feel confident and prepared for what is to come. So, here is an overview of the basics.

What Are Metal Braces?

Metal braces are one of the most commonly used orthodontic treatments to straighten teeth and correct bite issues. And kids, teens, and adults can all benefit from what they do.

Braces are made of three main parts, including brackets, archwires, and ligatures (elastic bands). And each of these works together to gently move your teeth into new positions with better alignment over time. The brackets are bonded to each tooth. Then, the archwire is the metal wire that connects each bracket. Elastic bands may then be used to hold the wire in place.

How Do Braces Actually Move Teeth?

You know that braces do their job, and you have an idea of what they look like. But, just how do they work? How can brackets and wires make permanent teeth move?

It's relatively simple, yet quite remarkable. The braces apply constant, gentle pressure to teeth, encouraging them to slowly shift into the correct position. As this happens, the bone around the teeth begins to change. On one side of the tooth, bone breaks down, and on the other side, new bone forms to support the tooth in its new position.

Knowing the process helps make sense of why orthodontic treatment takes time.

What Are Adjustment Appointments For?

Every few weeks, you can expect an appointment with our orthodontist for an adjustment. This is when we adjust your child’s braces by tightening them or changing the archwire. This ensures that the teeth have the right amount of pressure on them at all times, allowing them to continue to move in the specific direction.

Be prepared. Your child may experience some minor soreness after these appointments, but it is temporary.

How Long Are Metal Braces Worn?

Treatment time for traditional braces will vary based on your child’s needs. Someone with only minor concerns can complete treatment in a year, whereas someone with more complex needs may need to wear their braces for three years. It all comes down to the severity of crowding or spacing, bite alignment issues, and how well your child follows through with the care instructions.

When you visit us for a consultation, we will be able to provide you with an estimate of treatment time.

Parents know that traditional metal braces are the gold standard in orthodontic care and choose them for their children time and time again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do metal braces hurt?

Your child may feel some discomfort when braces are first placed or when they are adjusted, but this will subside within a couple of days. An over-the-counter pain reliever can help, if needed.

How do we care for braces at home?

Brushing after every meal, flossing daily, and avoiding sticky or hard foods that can damage brackets or wires is recommended.

Can my child still play sports or instruments?

Yes! We may recommend a mouthguard for sports and can provide tips for adjusting to musical instruments.

What happens after braces come off?

Your child will need to wear a retainer to keep their new smile in place while the bone stabilizes. The length of time will vary based on each patient.

Are metal braces the best option for every child?

Not always. We evaluate each patient individually and may discuss alternatives like ceramic braces or clear aligners, depending on their needs.
